Pugwash

Pugwash, NS · Transport Canada · Transport Canada · Northumberland Strait (at the mouth of the Pugwash River)

Pugwash is a Transport Canada-owned public port on the Northumberland Strait at the mouth of the Pugwash River in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, serving a community with commercial marine activity. Its dominant function is salt export: The Canadian Salt Company (Windsor Salt) operates the only underground salt mine in Nova Scotia here (in production since 1959, roughly 1.2 million tonnes per year) and maintains a company-owned ship-loading facility on the harbour. Bulk carriers call several times a year to load industrial salt, farm salt blocks, and refined salt, with vessels visible in the harbour from early spring to late autumn; product is also distributed by road and rail. The port also supports a local fishing fleet (notably lobster).
