Bear Head LNG / Point Tupper Terminal site (Bear Head Energy)
Point Tupper (Richmond County), NS · Private · Bear Head Energy Inc · Strait of Canso
The Point Tupper / Bear Head site is a permitted marine-industrial energy terminal on the Strait of Canso (Point Tupper Industrial Park, Richmond County, Cape Breton). Originally developed as the Bear Head LNG export project, it was repositioned by current owner Bear Head Energy Inc. (a wholly owned development of Buckeye Partners, acquired July 2022) as a large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production, storage and loading facility, permitted for up to 2 GW of electrolyzer capacity and targeting up to ~350 kt/year of hydrogen and up to 2 million tonnes/year of anhydrous ammonia for export. Product would be loaded and shipped via a marine terminal on the Strait of Canso — described as Eastern Canada's deepest year-round ice-free port — by roughly 40-60 specialty marine vessels annually. The project received Nova Scotia environmental assessment approval (Class I, approved with conditions) on April 12, 2023; it is proposed/under development with first ammonia production targeted for around 2027-2028 and reuses existing LNG-era foundations and ~$130M of prior civil works.
