Louisbourg
Louisbourg, NS · Transport Canada · Transport Canada · Louisbourg Harbour / Atlantic Ocean
Louisbourg is a federal public port owned and managed by Transport Canada (Atlantic Region) on the Atlantic coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Sited on the ice-free waters of Louisbourg Harbour, the port serves the local fishing fleet and seafood processing sector and is an important regional landing site for a large transient fleet, especially in winter when other ports are iced in; it also receives seasonal cruise ship calls tied to the Fortress of Louisbourg tourism economy. Historically the harbour was a major winter coal export terminal after the Sydney & Louisburg Railway reached it in 1894. The harbour basin also houses Canadian Coast Guard and Small Craft Harbours (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) infrastructure alongside the Transport Canada public-port facilities.
