Port Hawkesbury Pier
Port Hawkesbury, NS · Private · Strait of Canso Superport Corporation Limited · Strait of Canso
The Port Hawkesbury Pier is one of two marine facilities owned and operated by the Strait of Canso Superport Corporation Limited (SCSCL), located on the Strait of Canso, a deep-water, ice-free channel on Nova Scotia's east coast. The L-shaped pier, adjacent to the Strait of Canso Yacht Club, offers 5 to 6 metre depths along the wharf face and provides berth space for pleasure craft, small cruise ships, service vessels, fishing boats, tugs, barges, and pilot boats. Formerly the Port Hawkesbury Government Wharf, it was divested by Transport Canada and transferred to the Strait Superport in 2000; the corporation, formed in 1997, is a non-profit governed by a volunteer board representing regional interests, and also operates the nearby Mulgrave Marine Terminal which handles bulk and breakbulk/project cargo. Cargo traffic across the broader Strait of Canso superport complex includes manufactured goods, petroleum products, pulp, supercalender paper, gypsum, seafood, and bulk/breakbulk products.
