Rankin Inlet Sealift Site

Rankin Inlet, NU · Municipal · Hamlet of Rankin Inlet · Hudson Bay (Rankin Inlet / Kudlulik Peninsula)

Rankin Inlet is the administrative and transportation hub of Nunavut's Kivalliq region, located on the Kudlulik Peninsula fronting Hudson Bay. It has no deep-sea wharf; annual seasonal sealift resupply (late June to late October) is delivered by beach/lighterage offload, with cargo barged ashore from anchored sea-going vessels. Commercial dry-cargo and fuel resupply is handled by competing carriers including NEAS (Nunavut Eastern Arctic Shipping, sailing from Montreal) and NSSI (Nunavut Sealink and Supply Inc.), the latter routing cargo via Churchill, Manitoba, through truck/rail to Winnipeg and Thompson. Rankin Inlet has been repeatedly proposed as the site of a single consolidated regional deep-sea hub port to improve Kivalliq sealift distribution, but that infrastructure has not yet been built.
