Iqaluit Deep Sea Port

Iqaluit, NU · Territorial · Government of Nunavut · Frobisher Bay

Nunavut's first deep-sea port, located on a spit of land jutting into Frobisher Bay at Iqaluit. Built at a cost of roughly $84.9 million (75% federal via the New Building Canada Fund, the balance from the Government of Nunavut) and officially opened July 25, 2023 after construction began in 2018, it provides a dredged fixed-dock mooring, cargo laydown area, barge ramp and fuel manifold, allowing vessels to offload at all tides and cutting sealift offload times from days to hours. The facility handles sealift cargo, fuel tankers, Canadian Coast Guard vessels, research and naval ships, fishing trawlers and cruise ships, and includes a small-craft harbour with breakwater, floating docks and all-tide boat-launching for local boaters. It is government-owned and overseen by Transportation and Infrastructure Nunavut for ongoing operations and maintenance, while sealift cargo is moved by private carriers such as NSSI and NEAS; it is a commercial marine terminal, not a Canada Port Authority or Transport Canada Public Port.
