Port of Baie-Comeau
Baie-Comeau, QC · Municipal · Corporation de gestion du port de Baie-Comeau · St. Lawrence River (north shore / Côte-Nord)
The Port of Baie-Comeau is a year-round deepwater port on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River (Côte-Nord), historically a Transport Canada port now owned and managed locally by the Corporation de gestion du port de Baie-Comeau. It handles roughly 4 million tonnes of cargo annually, anchored by a large Cargill grain elevator (among the largest grain-storage terminals in Canada, used to transfer grain from Great Lakes vessels to ocean-going ships) and an Alcoa aluminium smelter wharf, plus mining/manufacturing goods, forest products and general cargo. Public terminal operations (notably Terminal No. 5) are run by stevedore QSL, with cargo loaded for export and unloaded for local industry. The port is served by CN rail, including a railcar-ferry link across the river to Matane, with truck access to storage; maximum wharf depth is about 9 m.
