Port of Algoma (Algoma Steel Export Dock)

Sault Ste. Marie, ON · Municipal · Port of Algoma · St. Marys River

A private deep-water harbour on the St. Marys River at Sault Ste. Marie, comprising the steel, iron ore and coal docks on the west side of Algoma Steel's roughly 440-acre integrated steelworks property; these are the only Seaway-draft dock facilities at the Sault. The docks handle inbound bulk raw materials for steelmaking (iron ore pellets, coal/coke) and outbound finished steel products (plate and sheet) for Algoma Steel Inc., a fully integrated producer with capacity of roughly 2.8 million tons per year. The dock-owning entity, "Port of Algoma," was created in September 2014 when Essar Steel spun off its dock facilities in a restructuring; it is about 99% owned by Essar Ports (a subsidiary of parent Essar Global Fund) and about 1% by the City of Sault Ste. Marie. A separate, publicly-accessible Great Lakes port at the same location remains in planning/feasibility study stage (supported by federal study funding) and would add tenant land, laydown and covered storage, and shore-side cargo-handling equipment.
