Burlington (Burlington Canal Piers)
Burlington, ON · Transport Canada · Transport Canada · Burlington Canal / Hamilton Harbour entrance, Lake Ontario
The Transport Canada "Burlington" facility refers to the Burlington Canal Piers — the north-east and south piers flanking the Burlington Canal, which cuts through the sandbar between Burlington and Hamilton on the Lake Ontario shore and forms the navigable entrance to Hamilton Harbour and the Port of Hamilton. The piers are a navigation/marine-access structure (vessel entry/exit point) rather than a commercial cargo terminal, and they are a popular community site connected to the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail and Beachway Park. Listed by Transport Canada's Ontario Region as a local/regional port facility, the piers remain federally owned, but Transport Canada transferred their day-to-day management to the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA) effective July 2, 2022, with HOPA investing in safety upgrades and public recreational access. The facility sits at the boundary of HOPA's jurisdiction and is now stewarded by HOPA, though it is distinct from HOPA's owned terminals and was retained by TC as a federal public port asset.
