Marathon (Peninsula Harbour) Port

Marathon, ON · Cooperative · Indigenous-affiliated · Peninsula Harbour Port Authority Corporation · Lake Superior

A commercial deep-water port under redevelopment on the north shore of Lake Superior at Marathon, ON, on the brownfield site of the former Marathon Pulp mill (permanently closed in 2019). It is being revived as the only commercial dock on the Canadian shore of Lake Superior between Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay, centred on a 557-foot wharf and roughly 90 acres of waterfront land with multimodal rail and road access and substantial on-site storage. The port is owned by the Peninsula Harbour Port Authority Corporation (a 50/50 joint venture of the Town of Marathon and Biigtigong Nishnaabeg) and, since a March 2024 partnership, is operated by terminal operator QSL, which is preparing a five-year business plan including draft-improvement and infrastructure upgrades. It is intended to serve regional mining/critical-minerals, forestry, logistics and manufacturing cargo (e.g. road salt, aggregate, equipment). Status: emerging/under development.
