Lafarge Manitoulin Quarry (Meldrum Bay) Marine Terminal
Meldrum Bay, ON · Private · Lafarge Canada Inc · Mississagi Strait (North Channel, Lake Huron / Great Lakes)
Lafarge Canada's Manitoulin Quarry at Meldrum Bay, on the west end of Manitoulin Island, is one of the largest marine aggregate quarries in Canada, extracting Amabel Formation dolostone (dolomite) used in concrete, road construction and metallurgical processing. The operation, which opened in the 1980s, loads crushed aggregate directly onto Great Lakes self-unloading freighters at company ship-loading docks on the Mississagi Strait, shipping roughly 4-5 million tonnes per year to U.S. Great Lakes markets (e.g. Cleveland, Chicago) and Ontario destinations. It is the largest employer in Western Manitoulin and among the largest on Manitoulin Island. The quarry is now part of Holcim's North American business operating under the Amrize brand.
