Voisey's Bay (Edward's Cove) Marine Terminal

Voisey's Bay (Anaktalak Bay), NL · Private · Vale Newfoundland & Labrador Limited · Anaktalak Bay (Edward's Cove), Labrador Sea / Atlantic coast

The Voisey's Bay marine terminal is a private mine port at Edward's Cove in Anaktalak Bay on the northern coast of Labrador, about 11 km north of Vale's Voisey's Bay nickel-copper-cobalt mine and roughly 35 km southwest of Nain. Trucks haul concentrate from the mine/concentrator to the wharf, where nickel concentrate is loaded for shipment to Vale's hydrometallurgical processing plant at Long Harbour, NL; the terminal also receives inbound mine supplies and fuel. The facility is serviced by a dedicated ice-class/ice-breaking bulk carrier (the Umiak I, operated by Fednav) able to navigate sea ice year-round. The wharf, completed in 2005 (first ship November 2005), is a sheet-pile structure of four 24.5 m-diameter circular cells spanning roughly 100 m, engineered with precast concrete impact panels and riprap armoring to withstand ice floes and icebreaker forces; it is owned and operated by Vale Newfoundland & Labrador Limited (formerly Voisey's Bay Nickel Company), a subsidiary of Vale Base Metals.
