Port of Port Hawkesbury
Port Hawkesbury, NS · Transport Canada · Transport Canada · Strait of Canso
Port Hawkesbury is a Transport Canada public port on the eastern shore of the Strait of Canso, one of the deepest ice-free harbours on North America's east coast. The federal port lies within the broader Strait of Canso "Superport" industrial complex, which serves the Port Hawkesbury Paper supercalendered-paper mill and the heavy-industry cluster at Point Tupper (oil/petroleum trans-shipment, gypsum, aggregates, and power generation). Cargo handled across the Strait has historically included crude petroleum trans-shipment plus crushed rock, gravel and other bulk/breakbulk commodities, making it one of Canada's busiest ports by tonnage (peaking around 31.6 Mt in 2006). Day-to-day operation of the local marine facilities (the Port Hawkesbury Pier and the Mulgrave Marine Terminal) is carried out by the Strait of Canso Superport Corporation Limited, while regional Transport Canada port matters are managed from the TC Atlantic Region office in Moncton.
