Port-aux-Basques (Channel-Port aux Basques)

Channel-Port aux Basques, NL · Transport Canada · Transport Canada · Cabot Strait (Gulf of St. Lawrence / Atlantic gateway)

Port aux Basques is the principal year-round Marine Atlantic ferry gateway connecting the island of Newfoundland to mainland Canada, with daily crossings across the Cabot Strait to North Sydney, Nova Scotia (a ~96 nautical mile / 5-7 hour run). It functions as the western terminus of the Trans-Canada Highway (Route 1) and the service is constitutionally guaranteed under the 1949 Terms of Union. Beyond passengers and personal vehicles, the terminal is a major freight gateway: Marine Atlantic moves over 100,000 commercial units annually here and the route handles more than half of all goods shipped to and from Newfoundland — including roughly 90% of perishable imports — with tractor-trailers, drop trailers, and livestock carried in the vessel decks. Operations are run by Marine Atlantic Inc., a federal Crown corporation, with four vessels (Ala'suinu, Blue Puttees, Highlanders, and Leif Ericson) serving the route; the underlying port asset is on the Transport Canada list of ports it owns in Newfoundland and Labrador.
